It was a great weekend for Adam Mohamed of Grimsby Santa Marina, who won the Top Boy award. Adam had been suffering from Supraventricular Tachycardia, an electrical heart problem, which he was apparently born with but was not diagnosed until he was 9 years old. By then he had already started swimming, so he just continued. Although the frequent attacks meant he missed a lot of training he never gave up. In fact swimming played a major part in him having 2 operations last year (2 years earlier than they normally attempt to correct the problem) because swimming meant that his heart was much stronger than that of other children his age.
Although the operation in April 2007 failed, at the end of November 2007 the surgeons managed to burn enough of the affected area away and deemed it a success. Although he has not been given the all clear yet he has been symptom free since the operation. This was his first gala since the operation and winning top boy was just the boost he needed. Congratulations from all at Rotherham Metro and I am sure Adam will be an inspiration to those who are fighting illness in a bid to return to our great sport of swimming.
