NER Championships and Thorne Tigers July 2009

Rotherham Metro had a busy weekend at the John Charles swimming pool in Leeds on the 20th and 21st June. First there was the Thorne Tigers Gala run over the weekend together with the final weekend of the NER BAGCAT Championships. The NER’s had to be relocated from Ponds Forge due to the flooding that occurred the previous weekend.

The club performed well in both galas. In the Thorne Tigers boys events George Russell came home with 7 Gold medals and 3 Bronze, Josh Hillman was awarded 2 Gold medals, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze, Tom Hesling collected 1 silver, Robert Kirk got 3 Gold and Sam Pearson won 1 Silver and 2 Bronze medals, Andrew Bishop won 2 Bronze and Jack Belcher won a Gold in the 50 metres Backstroke. George Russell and Josh Hillman also appeared in the boys Skinz finals. In the girls event Rebecca Durn won 2 Silver and 1 Bronze, Rebecca Britten won 2 Gold and 1 Bronze, Rebecca Worne won Gold in the 50 metres Fly and Chelsea Smith won 2 Silver and 2 Bronze. Chelsea also won the girls Skinz Final.

With regard to the NER gala the Sotheran duo came top again, Holly won 4 Silver medals and 2 Bronze and Matthew won 4 Golds and came 5th in the 100 Breaststroke. Alice Aucott came 4th in the 100 Breast and Emily Shone came 5th in the 100 Breast and 100 Back. The boys 800 Freestyle team came 8th, swimming in the team were James Shiel, Tom Gibbons, Josh Whitehurst and Matthew Sotheran. The girls 400 Freestyle came 11th in the 400 Freestyle and in the 400 Medley. The freestyle team consisted of Kelsey Longden, Nicole Clarke, Laura Gillott and Emily Shone and in the 400 Medley Shannon Eades swam in place of Nicole.

Head Coach Alan Kirton said he was impressed with everyone’s performance.
