Stocksbridge Sprints and NER Championships

The weekend of April 29th to May 1st saw ten Rotherham Metro swimmers take part in the North-East Region Senior and Youth Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

Alistair Crawford reached the finals of both the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle, coming fourth in both events. Catherine Taylor came 10th in the final of the 50m backstroke and also reached the semi-final of the 100m backstroke. Andrea Whaling reached the semi-final of the 50m butterfly whilst Tom Moxon got to the semi-final of the 50m breaststroke and Laura Whittaker won through to the semi-final of the 50m backstroke.

Other swimmers taking part were James Pepper, Charlotte Bailey, Emily-May Roebuck, Claire Shortt and Louise Rourke.

Earlier in April a squad of just under fifty Rotherham Metro swimmers took part in the annual Stocksbridge Spring Sprints Open Gala. Alistair Crawford (22) won two gold medals, breaking the meet records in both the 50m freestyle and the 50m butterfly, with times of 24.13 and 26.02 seconds respectively. Aaron Waterhouse also did well in the twelve year age group, winning a gold medal in the 50m breaststroke together with silver medals in each of the 50m freestyle, backstroke and butterfly. Joint top girl in the afternoon session, Paige Jepson, reached three finals in the thirteen year age group, gaining gold in the 50m backstroke and bronze medals in both the 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly.

In the ten year age group Nathan Salf reached all four finals coming second in the 50m breaststroke, and fifth in each of the 50m freestyle, backstroke and butterfly. Josh Whitehurst came fifth in the 50m breaststroke and sixth in the 50m freestyle. Also in the ten year age group Lauren Hobson came fourth in the 50m backstroke. Nicholas Grainger, Alex Kemp, Scott Mason and Charlotte Pearson all won medals in the eleven year age group. Nicholas came third in the 50m butterfly, fifth in the 50m backstroke and sixth in the 50m freestyle, whilst Alex came fourth in both the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle. Scott came second in the 50m breaststroke and Charlotte came fifth in the 50m backstroke.

In the twelve year age group Madison Elliot came third in the 50m backstroke and fifth in the 50m freestyle. Aimee Jepson came fourth and Ashleigh Reasbeck came sixth in the 50m backstroke final. Daniel McLean, aged thirteen, won third place in the 50m backstroke and fifth place in the 50m freestyle. In the fourteen year age group Dale Waterhouse came first in the 50m freestyle, second in the breaststroke and third in the backstroke. Laura Whittaker won second place in the 50m freestyle and third place in both the butterfly and backstroke. Louise Rourke came sixth in the 50m backstroke. In the fifteen and over age group Gemma Grinling took second place in the 50m breaststroke and fourth in the 50m backstroke. Catherine Taylor came first in the 50m backstroke and fourth in the 50m butterfly. Andrea Whaling won fourth place in the 50m breaststroke and sixth place in both the backstroke and freestyle finals. Emily-may Roebuck achieved second place in the 50m freestyle, Claire Short came third in the 50m breaststroke and Tom Moxon won fifth place in the 50m breaststroke.
